Welcome to HOLIDAY CARD EXCHANGE PROJECT page!
About the project
Teachers and students prepare an envelope with holiday cards to send to the other participants between October - December. Students may send Chinese New Year, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Eid greeting cards or cards that show local celebrations during December or January. Each school will be placed in a group with approximately seven other schools and will prepare either handmade or purchased cards (decorations may be included) to send to each of the other schools.
Project stages
Stage 1: Introductory stage. Teachers introduce themselves and their classes to their partners. Students prepare the cards for sending to partners. Teachers with their students post seven parcels to their partners. This may contain cards, school information, tourism information, music etc.
Stage 2: Cards are in the mail. Students and teachers exchange more information online about themselves, countries, school activities, culture. Teachers may organise Skype with one or more of their partners. The group can decide if they want to do other activities. Stage 3: Cards arrive from other countries. Teachers make a display in their school and post photos to share with their partners. This may be class based, school based or could include parents, school visitors, local press or television.
About 30 willing students from the 5th, the 6th and 8th grades have made about 70 Winter Holiday Cards that were sent together with information about Moldova, its geographical position, capital, sights, culture, customs and traditions related to religious holidays (New Year, Christmas, Easter) and national (Independence Day, Our Language) people from Moldova, recipes of our traditional food in 7 partner institutions from 6 countries (USA, Russia, Ukraine, India, Lithuania and Taiwan) from which we received in exchange greetings and other interesting information about their culture.
Making the cards, students practiced using various techniques and tools (working with paper, cutting, drawing, decorating, color matching). The project gave students the opportunity to develop their imagination, responsibility and critical thinking in the process of making the cards. They also gained knowledge and formed attitudes towards the culture of the partner countries, developed their abilities of writing various types of texts in English (descriptive, narrative, artistic, scientific, congratulatory messages, writing address), reading and using various online communication tools (blog, Skype, E-mail).
